The Confidence Game

Hartmann and I disagree on whether or not there is time to effect structural change through existing institutions. It took the Kochsters--the John Birch Society, et al--almost 50 years, and countless BILLIONS of dollars to finally corrupt the system enough (they call it, deceptively, "gaming") to install their shills and lickspittles and scabs in gummint to finally take over and deliver it.

We don't have that kind of time, or money, or even numbers.

Sorry 'bou'dat!

Local Licenses: The "Real" Targets Of The Attack On NPR

The "ether" on the Web--FB, of course, but elsewhere, too--is ABUZZ with the announcement that the House has scheduled a vote tomorrow on "zeroing out" NPR's federal appropriation. I'd say it's a done deal. Ever since that refugee from the Orleans Parish prison got the video, it's been a foregone conclusion, imho. You cannot tell the truth about the Teabaggers, cannot even imply that you KNOW the truth about them: which is that they are, indeed, the suburban arm of the KKK; the only difference being, the Baggers' sheets are polyester-blend, floral prints from WalMart, not the plain home-spun of Forrests' marauders.

But all that is a charade, part of the kabuki. What's at risk here, the real stakes in the game, are the licenses of the local outlets which would be imperiled if the local stations, which receive a total of around $95 MILLION annu8aly, lose that revenue stream.

What happens is, they are forced to sell the licenses. Licenses in even middling markets sell for fucking beaucoup Million$. Every frequency, in every market, is allotted. If the 1) the House zeros out NPR, and the Senate goes along, and St. Barry, the Pale, does not demonstrate hitherto unforeseen and unforeshadowed depths of courage, that's gonna be the pay-off.

No Homeland Security Unless We See The WHOLE PLANET As "Home."

John Perkins, the economic hitman of the title, is the real deal. I think he inclines a little too far toward "optimisim" under the circumstances, but this may be a sign of desperatuion from someone who has looked FAR into the abyss.

Here's a whole hour of these revelations:

Interesting Take; Futile Advice

ANY legislative angle on redressing the damage unleashed by CU v FEC is pretty much doomed to failure by the fact that the people who will be called upon to vote to approve any such legislation are either 1) already in the pockets of those whose interests would be threatened by such legislation or 2) intimidated by those deep pockets, and the threat of a well-financed, primary opponent.

And that is before you add in just how long the process of Amendment takes. Over 200 YEARS for the last one. And don't ask about the ERA, which would be milque-toast compared to any effort to overturn or reverse CU v. Fec...

And, remember, too there has to come a vote, eventually somewhere; now remember California's plebiscite on Prop. 8?

Marx In Soho! Back, On Public Transportation: "I Am Not A Marxist!"

And neither is Robert Reich. He explains:
I like Reich, except when he preaches his 'optimism' mantra for solutions. It's what he gets paid the big bux for: "Oh, look! Robert Reich's optimistic. It can't be ALL fucked up, can it?"

Sadly, yes.

In Wyoming: "Small Gummint Conservatives" Vs "Culture War Fucktards" In the GOP?

Rachel Maddow sees room for optimism on the issue of 'abortion" in the resistance of some "small gummint" conservatives to big, intrusive Fucktard/Fundie intrusionists who are waging the culture war as a political charade. I don't. Watch the clip, and I'll tell you why.

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

I am not at all 'relieved' that there, in Wyoming, the "most GOP lege" in the land, there seems to be a division on the Righjt on abortion when there is still gonna be unanimity when it comes to quashing environmental regs, or saving the wolves, or permitting extractive industries to rape the land for a buck, and I DON'T see ANY evidence that the GOP in Wyoming has any desires to rein in the CorpoRats.
