Sibel Edmonds Joins The Blogosphere. Shout "Hy-De-Hay, Sibel!"

Sibel Deniz Edmonds (born 1970) is a Turkish-American former FBI translator and founder of the National Security Whistleblowers Coalition (NSWBC).

Edmonds was fired from her position as a language specialist at the FBI's Washington Field Office in March, 2002, after she accused a colleague of covering up illicit activity involving foreign nationals, alleging serious acts of security breaches, cover-ups, and intentional blocking of intelligence which, she contended, presented a danger to the United States' security.

Since that time, court proceedings on her whistleblower claims have been blocked by the assertion of State Secrets Privilege. On March 29, 2006, she was awarded the PEN/Newman's Own First Amendment Award in recognition of her defense of free speech as it applies to the written word.
Apparently the Bush-regime gag-order on her has been lifted, because she's been posting for just about a month. The blog is not her first venture into the public sphere:
In August, 2004, Edmonds founded the National Security Whistleblowers Coalition (NSWBC), an alliance of whistleblowers who have come forward to address security weaknesses of the US. The NSWBC helps national security agency whistleblowers through advocacy of governmental and legal reform, public education on whistleblowing activity, provision of comfort and fellowship to national security whistleblowers suffering retaliation and other harms, and working with other public interest organizations. NSWBC is involved in backing former intelligence analyst Russ Tice, who was dismissed by the National Security Agency (NSA) in May, 2005. On December 16, 2005, ABC reported that Tice was among the sources of a leak about illegal NSA wiretap programs, ordered by the White House and first disclosed by the New York Times.
So let us welcome this brave and forthright colleague to the IT frontier. iBienvenidos!

"Drive-(A)Way Moments!": The Unbearable Righti-ness of NPR

As a listener for virtually the whole existence of NPR, I am one among many who has noticed, bemoaned, and railed against its transformation from a reliably skeptical, even-handed forum for competing ideas into one of those Corporate/State Media about which the epigram on my blog is concerned.

Who else remembers when Michael Harrington, leader of the DSPA, could be heard as regularly as Red Barber? I remember feeling a distinct sense of relief when searching the dial in a strange town, I'd hear those distinctive audio tones announcing I'd found the local outlet, signifying that this--e.g., Wichita Falls, Tx; Moline, Il; Fresno, Ca-- wasn't the benighted, collapsing outpost of civilization that it might have at first sight appeared to be, and that there might indeed be kindred spirits to be found in the flaps and folds of the enveloping community. If there was an NPR station somewhere near-by, you could probably live there. That was my theory at the time, anyway.

Now, the national news director, Robert Siegel, actually forbids interviews with or even the mention of Noam Chomsky. Sponsorship shapes the content and presentation, and they don't even bother to disguise it. And the organization has become increasingly dishonest about the outside affiliations of its 'correspondents.' That other universe in which Juan Williams is Bill O'Reilly's token/flunky/toady/stooge on Murdoch's festering, feculent Fox News is never discussed by the news-readers who introduce "Wan" Williams as an NPR" Senior Political Analyst." Others are equally compromised: Juan Forero, from Colombia, is one whose affiliations with the elites is indisputable; Julie Rovner is an employee of Kaiser HealthNewsNerwork, the propaganda arm of Kaiser Health; Cokie Roberts is so corrupted by her Villager "cred" that she became a self-parody a decade ago. Mara Liasson once directed a right-wing women's group while covering the Kerry campaign. NPR has apparently adopted the convenient fiction that the "center" is not an "ideology."

All this as introduction to the piece quoted, in its entirety below, from the blog Oxdown Gazette, to which I was directed this morning by the NPRCheck blog of which I am a devotee, and in the comments--in which I also frequently participate--where I found the link. If you, as I, have reached your limit with NPR ("Remember: You Can't Spell "REPUBLICAN" Without It!"), the following essay should be a tonic:
The Unbearable Lightness of NPR
By: rosalind Saturday June 13, 2009 1:05 pm

NPR announced today that in a cost-cutting move they have replaced their news writers with a computer program that uses a simple formula to generate stories:

Liberal Subject A derided by NPR Talking Heads B + C x Rightwing Talking Point D = False Equivalency of the Day

The key to the program's success is its use of non-specific subjects and sourcing. As an example, today's story "Rhetoric Surrounds Holocaust Memorial Shooting" - read by host Scott Simon and NPR news analyst & Fox News bon vivant Juan Williams - features such subjects as:

"left-wing blogs"
"right-wing blogs"
"the media"

With no specific names or actual quotes necessary for back-up, this program has universal applications towards the whole broadcasting spectrum.

There are bugs to be worked out, as exemplified by Mr. Williams consigning "lots of anger at immigrants" to the left-wing blogs and his citation of the hereto unknown "first amendment rights to criticize". Company officials have not yet determined if this is a programming code error or a simple syntax problem, but are leaning towards the latter.

When it was pointed out that Mr. Williams' closing cites actual facts from the Southern Poverty Law Center that contradict his earlier rhetoric in the piece, NPR officials smiled and proclaimed this a feature not a bug.

To demonstrate the program's amazing timesaving ability, technicians fed in random word clouds from today's wires and produced next Saturday's Weekend Edition Top Story: "Obama Nicotine Cravings Cited in Increased Iranian Unrest".

Note: Rumors that the NPR server housing this new computer program is shared by the NRSC were not confirmed by presstime. However the date atop the NPR press release of "June 13, 1009" and the fact the release itself was released on stone tablet supports the need for further inquiry into the matter.

All Predators "Smile"

John Pilger, the British pundit and fierce critic of USer imperialism, examines the spin on Obama's Cairo speech in the context of Israeli intransigence on civil and human rights for Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, at Information Clearinghouse. The take-away:
Obama offered no change, no plan, only a “tired, morally bankrupt American mantra [which] essentially argues that only the rich, the strong, the oppressors and the enforcers of injustice (notably the Americans and Israelis) have the right to use violence, while the poor, the weak, the oppressed and the victims of oppression must . . . submit to their fate and accept whatever crumbs their betters may magnanimously deign suitable to let fall from their table”. And he offered not the slightest recognition that the world’s most numerous victims of terrorism are people of Muslim faith – a terrorism of western origin that dares not speak its name.

In his “reaching out” in Cairo, as in his “anti-nuclear” speech in Berlin, as in the “hope” he spun at his inauguration, this clever young politician is playing the part for which he was drafted and promoted. This is to present a benign, seductive, even celebrity face to American power, which can then proceed towards its strategic goal of dominance, regardless of the wishes of the rest of humanity and the rights and lives of our children.
Israel CANNOT accept an equal, sovereign, independent, free Palestinian state WITHIN its borders. It is un-possible, in even the most benign sense of 'real-politik.' Israel's real-politik future CANNOT tolerate the existence of an equal, sovereign, independent Palestinian state. To acknowledge the existence of such a state would require the Israelis to negotiate in good faith on matters of shared resources, especially water. There is absolutely NO WAY that any Israeli politician could face the Israeli electorate having handed back to a Palestinian State water which the kibbutzim needed to make the desert bloom.

There is no way Israel can tolerate any arrangement for the Palestinians in Israel which is NOT fundamentally an apartheid regime of bantustans such as those the white South Africans set up for the pesky blacks; or, at best, reservations like those on which USers isolate and disempower those from whom WE stole "our" country.

"Thought Crimes": IANAL, But...

When I hear/read the phrase "thought crime," I always think of the theosophical crimes: sacrilege, blasphemy, heresy, apostasy, and the like; crimes against "belief," where the real fault is loss of 'faith.'

I do not think of "hate" crimes.

But some folks do, among them Jeralyn over at TalkLeft, where yesterday she relieved herself of a post on the matter, in which she bemoaned the emerging practice of adding extra sanctions to the punishments of those convicted of criminals who acted out of deep, ethnic/gender/sexuality fear and loathing, under a rubric that bewailed the practice as that of punishing 'thoughts.' "The last thing we need are more crimes and prosecutions based on thoughts instead of actions. This is a very slippery slope," she wrote.

I was confused, and wrote her so--though my comment was ignored. My confusion centered on the well-known and long-established exaggerating factor, in the prosecution of certain crimes, of "premeditation," which is often a factor in what punishments the prosecution seeks for folks who commit murders, for example. To include charges of "premeditation" in a prosecution actually MEANS 'prosecuting' the thought, which preceded the deed. Though no act included in the process of premeditation be in itself illegal or criminal, because it became part of a larger act, the act of premeditation, itself, adds to the seriousness of the crime.

I tried to make a case that, with the issue of 'hate' crimes, the addition of more serious penalties was exactly analogous with the act of premeditation. By definition, a hate crime is an act of conscious, premeditated violence based on pre-existing bias, discrimination, etc. A hate crime is not "spontaneous," because the victim has to be selected for the act on the basis of observable behavior; then oppprtunity must be sought, and then the act committed for the premeditated motive.

Or?

IANAL....

"The Vampire-Elites of Wall Street"

They feed on the blood-money they extort from the rest of us.

Michael Moore (yep, still fat) has bestirred himself once again to poke sharp, shit-encrusted sticks into the surprisingly thin, unexpectedly tender hides of yet another herd of sacred cattle: the bandits, cheats, bunco-artists, Ponzi-schemers, thieves, hucksters, sharpies, and assorted other well-dressed low-lifes in the Big Money bidness:
By Anthony Breznican, USAToday

Michael Moore wants his money back. Actually, he wants your money back, if you lost any in the financial meltdown. (And who didn't? The fuckers took me for about 50% of my nest-egg. Emphases supplied. W)

And though he knows that probably won't happen, the filmmaker at least wants to stick it to the people who took it. (
Ummm, how the fuck does he know it probably won't happen again. Anyone with a third of the brain of a sponge knows the banksters even now are setting it up precisely so it WILL happen again. W)

The still untitled film, which opens Oct. 2, will zero in on the corporations and politicians he says caused the global financial crash.

Wall Street robber barons are Moore's new on-screen enemy.

"The movie is not going to be an economics lesson; it's going to be more like a vampire movie," the filmmaker jokes. "Instead of the main characters feasting on the blood of their victims, they feast on the money. And they never seem to get enough of it."

When the collapse walloped the country last September, Moore says he knew not only that it would matter to regular people, but also that the inherent decadence was ripe for his style of satire.

"If you go to see my movies, even if you don't agree with everything in the movies, you're going to have a good laugh," Moore says. "I want them to walk out at the end saying 'Wow, that was something!' And in this case, maybe they also walk out asking the ushers, 'Um, excuse me. Where are the pitchforks and torches?' "
"Enemy" might be a little strong. "Villains" would be closer to it. Criminals. Crooks. Malefactors. Thieves. Scum-sucking rat-bastards. Scheduled for release in early October, the film is still untitled. I suggest a contest. My choice is the hed, above.

Incidentally, the tenor of the comments attached to the story on the USAToady website indicate that Moore is still regarded as a chubby, male Cassandra.

60 Indigenes "Insurgents" Killed By Govt. Troops

Where, you ask? Iraq? Pakistan? Afghanistan? Kashmir? Sri Lanka? The customaryr, distant, safe hot-spots?

Nah.

Mexico? Colombia? Venezuela?

Getting warmer.

Where?

Peru!

Why?
Recent free trade agreements signed with the American and Canadian governments fueled the government to go ahead with changes to domestic laws that would seek to advance mineral, logging, oil and agricultural ‘development’ into previously untouched areas of the Amazon. This touched off a over-50-day protest that has shut down parts of the Amazon.
Via the REALnews Net:

The Amazin' Amazon! Kapital will leave no resource unextracted, no matter the cost, whether to the indigenes whose lives will be forever interrupted, or the planet, which relies on the Amazon River forest to cleanse about half of its air.

They're gonna fuck it up! THEY ALWAYS FUCK IT UP!

Fox, In A Word: "Voyeurism"

It is not an accident that the set furniture inclines women's knees up and forward. Neither is it accidental that when seated, their skirts merely shade but do not cover their pudenda. I imagine the poor women's legs must cramp, holding their thighs so tightly closed and legs so resolutely crossed.

Meanwhile, the Faux-tard viewers--overwhelmigly male--are simply captivated by the possibility of a surreptitious blonde panty-shot! It doesn't matter a whit what the guests are saying as long as there is a chance of an "up-skirt" look. This Is As Close To "Strange" As Most Male Faux Gnus Viewers Are EVER Gonna Get! The pitiful mopes: all they're in it for is the "fatal attraction" moment...

A better illustration of the underlying, slack-jawed, loose-lipped, drooling, tongue-lolling, sticky-palmed, stalker-voyeurism that is at the very CENTER of the entire Faux enterprise could not be "made up."

Wells-Fargo Banksters Gave "Bounties" For Sub-Prime Sign-ups

Dean Starkman, writing in the CJR blog this morning, has details--from the Baltimore Sun and the NY Times--of nefarious--though altogether predictable--Bankster plots to ensnare "up-wardly mobile" minority borrowers in predatory, sub-prime home loans. The papers report on a study from Baltimore highlighting "social and class aspects of the mortgage crisis with stories on an 825-page amended predatory lending complaint filed by the city of Baltimore, including affidavits from ex-Wells Fargo loan officers." The complaint alleges the Banksters targeted "low-income strivers" specifically to feed Wall Street’s securitization machine.

These are not the first such allegations levelled against the predatory home-loan 'industry,' but they are among the first to include actual testimony from bankster insiders revealing the explicit racial/class bias of the Banksters. Starkman writes: "In this case, we see more evidence of the most noxious aspect of the credit crisis—the wealth transfer from amateur-borrowers with an already-precarious financial foothold to an out-of-control financial-services sector." It was and still is a systematic scheme to steal wealth from American families to enrich the banks. Starkman continues:
Leaving aside the inflammatory language alleged in the complaint (in which bank employees talk about “ghetto loans,” etc.), the important part is where Beth Jacobson, who says she was once the bank’s top subprime producer, alleges that blacks with prime credit were steered as a matter of policy into more expensive subprime products. (Emphasis supplied. W)
“We just went right after them,” said Ms. Jacobson, who is white and said she was once the bank’s top-producing subprime loan officer nationally. “Wells Fargo mortgage had an emerging-markets unit that specifically targeted black churches, because it figured church leaders had a lot of influence and could convince congregants to take out subprime loans.”
Another ex-Wells loan officer speaks to the incentives that attached to loan officers steering even prime borrowers to subprime products, which of course fetched a premium on secondary markets.
“The company put ‘bounties’ on minority borrowers,” Mr. Paschal said. “By this I mean that loan officers received cash incentives to aggressively market subprime loans in minority communities.”
Wells denies the allegations and has moved for the complaint’s dismissal.
Leaving aside the language? That's like leaving out the "Let's Fuck Granny" quote from the Enron cables, faxes and e-mails, innit? The thievery is one thing, but the conscious, class/race-based attack on the poor and marginalized magnifies the affront exponentially. I think a week in the pillory should be the required punishment for these racist shit-heels. And eternal banishment from the field, in any manifestation.

How Many Bushevik US Attorneys Still Hold Office?

I cannot find out.

Does anybody know? Or how to discover this important number? That there are ANY is a fucking scandal. Why do ANY of them retain their positions? Why do ANY of them still preside over prosecutions?

Holder's DoJ last week announced that it had reviewed the convictions of a couple of Ted Stevens' co-conspirators in the fleecing of Alaska and discovered prosecutorial misfeasance enough to throw out the convictions and release the criminals from jail. These were the second and third Busheviki so honored by Holder's atttention to justice.

Mark Crispin Miller echoes the general frustration with the Obama/Holder DoJ:
The man (and the man he works for) just can’t seem to stop exonerating BushCo’s men–and also just can’t seem to start considering the gross injustices committed by Bush/Rove against Don Siegelman, Paul Minor, Oliver Diaz and all the others.
The also cannot apparently be bothered to replace the Busheviki who PASSED the political litmus tests in 2005 and retained their jobs when others, like David Iglesias, here in NM, were being FIRED for insufficient attention to maintaining and preserving Karl Rove's PPM (Perennial Puke Majority). Holder was here in ABQ on Friday, but none of our enterprising SCUM (SoCalledUnbiasedMedia), print, pix or vid, had the balls to ask the questions. Miller aptly quotes Roger Shuller:
Attorney General Eric Holder apparently cannot be bothered to review the political prosecutions of Democrats Don Siegelman and Paul Minor (or others). But he seems to have no problem letting Republicans off the hook, with the latest example coming yesterday with news that the DOJ is asking that former Alaska state legistors Victor Kohring and Peter Kott be released from prison because of prosecutorial misconduct in their cases. On the heels of the Ted Stevens and James Tobin cases, the Obama AG now has made four favorable rulings for Republicans, zero for Democrats. Is that change we can believe in?
Seems to me sometimes the 'smirk' of the Chimp's been replaced by Obama's big, toothy, shit-eating smile, but that's ALL that's changed...

Obama, Viewed From The 51st (or 52nd) State

Max Blumenthal venturing, fearlessly, again into the maw of the Beasts. Via MondoWeiss:
On the eve of President Barack Obama’s address to the Muslim world from Cairo, Egypt, I stepped out onto the streets of Jerusalem with my friend Joseph Dana to interview young Israelis and American Jews about their reaction to the speech. We encountered rowdy groups of beer sodden twenty-somethings, many from the United States, and all eager to vent their visceral, even violent hatred of Barack Obama and his policies towards Israel. Usually I offer a brief commentary on my video reports, but this one requires no comment at all. Quite simply, it contains some of the most shocking footage I have ever filmed. Watch it and see if you agree. (Warning: this video contains profanity and material offensive to just about anyone.)
I watched it and my hands itched for a baseball bat, with which to remind these graceless fucks of the reason for "manners."

Am I the only person who has noticed that the accents of the "settlers" stealing Palestinian land and property almost ALL sound like Americans?

The Sotomayor "Syndrome"

That bent, humble, penitent posture of supplicants to the dominant, white, male power/elite, who demand a full retraction, as humiliating as possible-a ritual of self-abasing groveling--from any person-of-color aspiring to even nominal parity in that system who has ever in their public life had the unmitigated temerity to rebuke or challenge, or otherwise call attention to white USer racism; and a blow job.

She is not the first to experience it, of course. But seldom before has it been so central a focus, so apparently potent a wedge.

Because I am beginning to think she might be vulnerable to the charge to which Obama himself will be rhetorically, if not factually, challenged. White people cannot imagine that somebody who has ever experienced the conditions which they themselves are in denial about but still realize the existence of, could EVER not use the first chance they got to get even. Even a whiff that she might not actually bow to their privileges automatically sets her up for disqualification.

It is part of a conscious, premeditated strategy to marginalizethe Obama regime as threats to white power and privilege--to RACIALIZE it, explicitly, if we were going to be frank. That was a never-too-deeply buried subtext during the election campaign, too. Obama, who ironically has worked hard to distance himself from evidencing too much 'empathy' for the poor--his FEMA's trailer generosity notwithstanding--and the concerns of minorities and other disempowered citizens--as could conceivably be imagined--is being accused of betraying white power to the less powerful, anyway.

This has always been a result that could/should have been anticipated given the range of possible constructions available from hegemonic imagery and rhetorical lexicons. Indeed, I predicted it more than a year ago.

20 Things You WON'T Be Reminded Of Tomorrow

Tomorrow, Thursday, June 4, is the fifth anniversary of the death of Ronald Wilson Reagan, 40th President of the United States and arguably the author (in a Foucauldian sense, anyway) of more mischief upon the Nation than any other previous official political actor. No regime before his had more actively sought to overthrow, undermine, undo, obstruct, and otherwise hamstring the authority of the Congress and the Constitution in the pursuit of mere political advantage, without any appeal to, or concern for, the real good of "the People."

So I won't be listening to the radio, or watching SCUM TeeVee, either.

I wanted to spare my dogs.

Poor dumb beasts, they get worried when I hurl loud invective and obloquy--to say nothing about ash-trays and flower pots--at the disembodied voices on the radio.

And, given the outpouring of sanctimonious twaddle, gratuitous propaganda and lugubrious schmaltz over the anniversary of the death of Ronald Reagan which will surely occupy virtually the entire news spectrum of the day, I would have plenty of opportunity to launch barrages of vivid vituperation, epic expletive, and ubiquitous obloquy against both the dearly-departed "American Hero," and the obsequious drone of the sycophants who will be reciting their eulogies.

Lest we/you forget, I have assembled a list of some 20 of the most compelling reasons that Ronald Reagan SHOULD NOT BE so universally esteemed, his passing so mourned, and his memory so honored:

1) Treason: As a private citizen, and BEFORE the election, in contravention of both law and tradition, Reagan's minions and handlers illegally negotiated with the Iranians to induce them hold the American Embassy hostages until after the elections,to embarrass President Carer and to prevent his successful negotiation of an "October Surprise." Sent future VP George Bush, Sr., and future CIA chief William Casey to Paris to negotiate the deal.

2) Sent arms, including chemical weapons, to both Iraq and Iran during the decade-long Iran-Iraq war, making those two countries the two biggest US arms trading partners at precisely the time when it was illegal to trade with either due to both US and UN laws.

3) Iran/Contra: Used drug traffickers to transport illegal arms to Nicaragua, ignoring the contraband which was brought back on the return trip, creating a massive and immediate increase in cocaine trade in urban California. Illegally used the CIA to mine harbors and ferry Contra troops in Nicaragua. Eventually, several administration staffers were convicted of crimes ranging from lying to Congress to conspiracy to defraud the U.S. The scandal involved the administration selling arms to Iran and using proceeds from the sales to fund a guerrilla insurgent group in Nicaragua

4) Created alQaeda in Afghanistan to oppose the Soviet puppet/occupation there

5) Sponsored right-wing, State terrorism in El Salvador, Honduras, Haiti, and Guatemala against indigenous insurgents who were fighting the dictatorial, hereditary regimes there. Illegally invaded and occupied Grenada, overthrowing the democratically elected President

6) Lied about ALL of this activity before Congress, and suborned his Secretary of Defense to perjury, as well.

7) Rescinded Carter policy that all US international financial support be based upon valid human rights records.

8) Took the world to the brink of nuclear war, putting nuclear weapons into Europe, violating the very provision that was the settlement to the Cuban missile crisis.

9) Instituted the so-called "Mexico City" doctrine, effectively barring recipients of U.S. foreign aid from promoting abortion as a method of family planning.

10) Instigated trickle-down/voodoo economics, which was the beginning of what has recently culminated in the crash of the bubbles. Here is a subset of his regime's economic sins:
a) Within the first year of the policy, we were in a depression caused in large measure by the policy. The "historic" 27% tax-cut was skewed two to one in favor of those making over $200,000 per year, in percentages, and far more in real dollars. By the end of the second year, increases in state and local taxes more than replaced the cuts for the middle class.

b) Wages throughout Reagan/Bush remained stagnant in real dollars for the next 12 years, the longest and worst growth performance in middle class wages in US history. Average national growth was the lowest since the early 30s.

c) Conspired with corpoRat and congressional allies to sustain spending by loosening credit, to replace the wages they were not going to increase.

d) Named Ayn Rand acolyte and free-market apostle Alan Greenspan as Chief of the Federal Reserve.
11) The HUD/DoI Scandals: Samuel Pierce and his associates were found to have rewarded wealthy contributors to the administration's campaign with funding for low income housing development without the customary background checks, and lobbyists, such as former Secretary of the Interior James G. Watt, were rewarded with huge lobbying fees for assisting campaign contributors with receiving government loans and guarantees. Sixteen convictions were eventually handed down, including several members of the Reagan administration.

12) Appointed some of the "worst" Federalist Society/strict constructionists to the federal bench, including Scalia, Kennedy, and O'Connor, ALL of whose votes were crucial in (illegally) installing GW Bush in the presidency in 2000, and named Rehnquist Chief Justice.

13) Ordered the revocation of the FCC regulation called "the Fairness Doctrine," and opened up the Press to the rash of consolidations which has led, now, to a compromised, toothless, stenographic, lap-dog "Fourth Estate."

14) Initiated the attack on labor unions by attacking PATCO, the Air Traffic Controllers union, creating a crisis in airport control towers nation-wide, and importantly, started the slow erosion of US worker wages and benefits.

15) Through the appointment of James Watt, who claimed that the environment was "expendable" since the "second coming of Christ was at hand,", Reagan reduced clean water and air standards, reduced labor, mine, and industrial safety standards, and cut funding to supervisory and regulatory agencies charged with monitoring those industries.

16) Increased the defense budget to 240% previous levels.

17) Systematically ignored the beginning of the AIDS/HIV epidemic, blaming the victims publically.

18)The S&L collapse: Reagan's "elimination of loopholes" in the tax code included the elimination of the "passive loss" provisions that subsidized rental housing. Because this was removed retroactively, it bankrupted many real estate developments made with this tax break as a premise. This with some other "deregulation" policies ultimately led to the largest political and financial scandal in U.S. history: The Savings and Loan crisis. The ultimate cost of the crisis is estimated to have totaled around USD$150 billion, about $125 billion of which was consequently and directly subsidized by the U.S. government, which contributed to the large budget deficits of the early 1990s.

19) Called ketchup a vegetable for the purposes of school-lunch funding and reduced early education and head-start funding.

20) Symbolically ripped the solar panels, installed by Pres. Carter, from the WhiteHouse, and blamed trees for causing air pollution.
No, I do not miss the son-of-a-bitch. To the extent that the coverage of the anniversary of the demise of this traitorous, vile sock-puppet ignores or ignored these "tiny missteps," that is the extent to which I would have been obliged to disturb my dogs with my curses.

I would without compunction defile his grave.

If either Jon Stewart of Colbert has the stones to cover the memorials "unfairly," I could be tempted. C'mon, Jon, Stephen! TEMPT ME!!!

AG Holder and DHS Napolitano In ABQ This Week

They're here on Friday to roll out something called the "The President's 2009 National Southwest Border Counternarcotics Strategy." I am just guessing here but I'll bet there'll be another one next year--2010 National Southwest Border Counternarcotics Strategy--et seq?

"Counternarcotics Strategy"? Wanna bet that's the new, improved, replacement, non-threatening euphemism for the War On Drugs, which, I imagine will entail the remilitarization of the border, harsher search and interrogation techniques, more "boots on the ground," and the renewed ultra-demonization of pot users? I don't suppose any discussion of legalization will occur, even though that is the ONLY expedient with even the TINIEST possibility of succeeding.

Via the local blog, FBIHOP:
Department of Homeland Security head Janet Napolitano and Attorney General Eric Holder will be in Albuquerque on Friday to unveil President Obama's 2009 National Southwest Border Counternarcotics Strategy.

The two cabinet-level Obama advisers will also be joined by Office of National Drug Control Policy Director Gil Kerlikowske.

"Secretary Napolitano will also swear in new members of the Homeland Security Advisory Council (HSAC). Comprised of national security experts from state, local and tribal governments, first responder communities, academia and the private sector, HSAC provides advice and recommendations directly to Secretary Napolitano on homeland security issues," Napolitano spokeswoman Sara Kuban said in a statement.

Napolitano is an Albuquerque native and Sandia High School graduate. Napolitano served as Arizona governor before being confirmed as Obama's Secretary of Homeland Security.
Maybe some brave soul could ask AG Holder:
1) When he plans to replace the bushevik holdovers in US Atty posts all across the country?

and

2)When he plans to do for Don Siegelman what he and "thePrez" were at such pains to so rapidly accomplish for that cretinous, criminal GOPuke fuckwad Ted Stevens, and throw out the whole case against Siegelman for gross prosecutorial misconduct and judicial prejudice?
Maybe someone could ask Napolitano what plans she has to ask for modifications to the PATRIOT ACT to lessen its more idiotically dreckonian (stet) provisions, if not to repeal it altogether?

What'll you bet no such questions are even considered, much less asked? I'd bet the tiny shreds of my sorely diminished retirement accounts. The local SCUM (SoCalled Unbiased Media) are reliably tame, message-broke (the journalistic equivalent of being 'stump-broke' in livestock) and well-schooled in sycophancy...

Local ABQ media are such pussies. They faithfully record the pronouncements of the powerful, but seldom ask questions. In 2007, Cheney was in town for some military charade, and the locals faithfully excerpted his prepared remarks, even though Cheney prohibited questions from the press. They persisted in their stenography when they were denied the chance to ask even perfunctory little questions.

When I called a couple of them about it--notably the local news department of the NPR affiliate--they said the mere visit was enough to justify the coverage, and that it wasn't necessary to ask questions. I threw-up a little in my hand as I was hanging up...

Meta-BillO-Ism

The left blogs, the big guys like Crooks and Liars, or Think Progress, are totally obsessed with Faux Noise (Fox news), and especially with Bill ("Fuck it!! We'll Do It Live") O'Reilly.

And it's easy, actually, to see why. They thrive and survive on generating outrage and obloquy against the worst excesses of the Fucktard/Flying Monkey/Xiano-Fascist Right, and nobody can compare with "Falaffel" Bill (so named from the released transcripts of his sexually harassing phone calls to his former producer, Andrea Mackriss). He may reliably be counted upon to achieve the heights of faux outrage, hubristic pomp, bone-deep stupidity, and the vilest racial, sexual, or class-based slurs.

The outrage over Bill-O this week comes in the wake of the assassination of Wichita (KS) abortion provider, George Tiller. O'Reilly, full of faux outrage at the 'murders' Tiller committed as a late-term abortion provider, had featured the man O'Reilly called "Tiller, the killer," on 29 segments of his televised O'Reilly Factor over the last 4 years. The list of the calumnies Shitheel Bill heaped on Tiller would take up more of my energy than I am at the moment willing to devote to listing them. Suffice to say, had I been Dr. Tiller, I would have tried very hard to break O'Reilly's kneecaps, and shattered his wrists irreparably, for the insult.

Which is beside the point; which is how three prominent lefty political blogs wrote about O'Reilly's first broadcast after the assassination for which, in a just world, O'Reilly would bear some responsibility. Loufa Bill (another Mackriss moment), of course loudly and archly disclaimed ANY liabiltiy for the assassination, even though he as much as suggested it to his listeners on several occasions.

Anyway, just for fun, follow the links in the cires below, and see how each one both echoed and avoided the others:

Falafel Bill: The Face of Right-wing Eliminationism

"Since 2005, Bill O’Reilly has waged jihad against Dr. George Tiller, dedicating 29 segments of his show to demonizing and dehumanizing Tiller, who he invariably called "Tiller, the baby killer."

As you can see from these video clip samplings of O’Reilly’s holy war, you don’t have to actually pull the trigger to help sponsor terrorism:"

The Tiller Killing:Can we at least call it what it was?

Assassination, an act of political terrorism!

This was not an act of 'mere' murder. It was terrorism, meant to intimidate doctors, their staffs, and patients who need the service.

Paul Rosenberg,
a mainstay at Open Left, and a thoughtful, careful writer and thinker, put up a diary in the wake of the assassination, in Wichita, KS, yesterday, of late-term abortion provider Dr. George Tiller. Tiller had long been the almost sole focus of the anti-choice, anti-abortion, soi-disant "Pro-Life" movement because Tiller was almost the sole provider of late-term abortions. He was such an icon for the rabid "Pro-Lifers" that Operation Rescue dispatched a top lieutenant, Troy Newman, to Wichita to harass, terrorize, and intimidate Tiller and his clinic staff, interfere with their procedures, and heckling patients, including stalking them, sending anti-choice propaganda to their neighbors, picketing their churches, and implicit threats of violence, as well as continuous litigation.

Violence like this:
Tiller and his clinic have faced continuous threats and legal action.
...
Protesters blockaded Tiller's clinic during Operation Rescue's "Summer of Mercy" protests during the summer of 1991, and Tiller was shot by Rachelle Shannon at his clinic in 1993. Tiller was wounded in both arms. Shannon remains in prison.

The clinic was bombed in June 1986 and was severely vandalized last month. His lawyer said wires to security cameras and outdoor lights were cut and that the vandals also cut through the roof and plugged the buildings' downspouts. Rain poured through the roof and caused thousands of dollars of damage in the clinic. Tiller reportedly asked the FBI to investigate the incident.
...
A Wichita jury ruled in March that he was not guilty of illegal abortion on 19 criminal charges he faced for allegedly violating a state law requiring an independent second physician's concurring opinion before performing late-term abortions. Immediately following the ruling in the criminal case, the Kansas Board of Healing Arts made public a similar complaint against Tiller that was originally filed in December 2008.
Of course, Tiller's assassination constitutes the final act of that tableau, even if Newman and his minions are not immediately or directly implicated. Rosenberg's diary points out how such an event is the inevitable (!) consequence of the movement's policy/politics of coercion:
The violence is natural end of the logic of coercion, and coercion is precisely what anti-choice activists are all about. It's not just mere happenstance that violence comes from the anti-choice side, and not the other way around. This is the very essence of the issue: coercion vs. choice.
"Pro-Life" is a euphemism, Rosenberg continues, for the "Forced Delivery."
The violence of the anti-choice side is not simply a matter of unhinged emotion--although it certainly is that. But it is also a matter of deadly logic: this is what their position must, inevitably lead to. Coercion is the heart of the anti-choice, forced-childbirth movement. And the analysis presented above is one way of seeing why this is so.
"Pro-Life" right up to the moment of birth. After that, ummmmm, not so much...

I read with some interest the report that the police were not saying they had a suspect. My hope was that the killer was also dead. Because Wichita KS, home to Fred Phelps, might well not convict the "baby-killer's" killer...

Addendum: A commenter at Obsidian Wings voiced the common complaint:
(O)nce you grant the right to unrestricted abortions at any time, you cannot deny it to anyone for any reason. It's silly to grant an absolute right in the hope that it will only be used in cases you approve of. And while the vast majority of women are certainly not interested in having abortions at late stages of the pregnancy, you simply cannot rule out cases were women would take advantage of such a right, just because they have decided that they don't want the baby after all. Such cases would provide fodder for the "pro-life" activists and the tabloids.
When I read such tripe and drivel, I wonder if the women in such a man's life really understand the utter contempt for their moral lives in which such a person holds them. And if not, when someone will tell them...

MILK: "The Gateway to Alcoholism"

The hed (above) is of course true, once you accept the "post-hoc, ergo propter hoc" fallacy. It is meant to highlight the incredible logic of the folks who claim marijuana is 'the gateway drug' to using (and always, by implication of course, "abusing") heroin, cocaine, meth, and the rest of the illicit pharmacopoeia.

While it is probably true that people who eventually use (though not necessarily abuse) those other substances used marijuana 'first,' so it is equally likely--and equally valid to claim--that drinking milk "led" destructive alcoholics to their addiction, too. It's perfect illustration of the old statistical wheeze: correlation does not equal causality. Because, of course, many more people--probably MOST of them--who "used" milk in their youth did NOT go on to 'abuse' liquor than those who did. (Right: Mother, sowing the seeds of her child's future drunkenness.)

The folks at Alternet put up a discussion of this issue yesterday, which makes the necessary point in much lengthier style than I have here. Here's the "nutz":
In 1999, the National Institute on Drug Abuse commissioned a major study on medical marijuana conducted by the venerable Institute of Medicine, which included an examination of marijuana's potential to lead to other drug use. In simple terms, the researchers explained why the gateway theory was unfounded:
Patterns in progression of drug use from adolescence to adulthood are strikingly regular. Because it is the most widely used illicit drug, marijuana is predictably the first illicit drug most people encounter. Not surprisingly, most users of other illicit drugs have used marijuana first. In fact, most drug users begin with alcohol and nicotine before marijuana -- usually before they are of legal age.
…
There is no conclusive evidence that the drug effects of marijuana are causally linked to the subsequent abuse of other illicit drugs.
In 2006, the University of Pittsburgh released a more thorough study in which researchers spent 12 years tracking a group of subjects from adolescence into adulthood and documented the initiation and progression of their drug use. The researchers found that the gateway theory was not only wrong, but also harmful to properly understanding and addressing drug abuse:
This evidence supports what’s known as the common liability model, an emerging theory that states the likelihood that someone will transition to the use of illegal drugs is determined not by the preceding use of a particular drug but instead by the user’s individual tendencies and environmental circumstances.
Of course, the simplest refutation of the gateway theory is the basic fact that most marijuana users just don't use other drugs. As the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reports:
More than 100 million Americans have tried marijuana; 14.4 million Americans are estimated to be "past-month" users. Yet there are only an estimated 2,075,000 "past-month" users of cocaine and 153,000 "past-month" users of heroin. [DrugWarFacts] (Emphases supplied. W)
Clearly, people who use marijuana overwhelmingly do not move on to other drug use. That's why the number of people who use marijuana will always be more than 10 times greater than the number of people who use cocaine, heroin, etc. The fact that marijuana users rarely become involved in other drug use is right here in front of us.
There's more, a couple of pages, but the point is pretty clear: "If you want to prevent alcoholism, you must stop feeding milk to babies."

Erm...no, wait...
